Probably, not every one of our compatriots has eaten snails. But in France and many Western European countries, edible snails are considered a delicacy, and dishes made from them are very popular. People in China, Japan, and some African countries also eat snails. In Ukraine, snail dishes are mostly eaten by gourmets who understand the value of tasty, healthy, and wholesome food.
Of course, not all snails are edible, but only some of their species, which are usually bred on special farms. In particular, Helix Aspersa Muller snails (small gray ones) are rightfully considered to be among the most delicious. They weigh up to 10 grams, the shell diameter is up to 25 millimeters, they have a beautiful shell with spotted streaks. These are the snails that are bred on the family snail farm Mons Snail, located in the village of Deliatyn, near the resort town of Yaremche (the distance from our hotel “Chillax” is just over 40 kilometers).
The owners of the farm are spouses Volodymyr and Hanna Struts. They not only breed edible snails on an industrial scale, but also invite everyone to visit their unique farm! During the tour of the farm, you can see the whole process with your own eyes, and Volodymyr Struts will tell you in detail about snails and the peculiarities of their breeding, because he knows absolutely everything on this topic.
While you are exploring the farm, Mrs. Hanna will prepare you a wonderful treat from the freshest snails. Among the dishes offered – to choose from:
- stuffed snails (in 3 different sauces);
- salad with marinated snail meat;
- banosh with julienne with mushrooms and snail meat;
- mushroom soup with snail meat;
- snail liver pate.
