Velyka Syvulia is one of the highest and most famous peaks of the Gorgany range, and also the highest point of this massif. Its elevation is 1,836 m (some sources list 1,836.6 m), which clearly explains why Syvulia feels like a “serious hike” rather than a casual walk. There’s a lot of rock, a lot of space, and the sense of civilization fades quickly — leaving only the ridge, the wind, and the Carpathians all around.

The name Syvulia has a simple explanation: the stones on the summit look “grey-haired” because lichens cover the scree. Local legends offer a romantic version too — about a girl who turned grey from fear and captivity — but the mountain’s main image stays the same: pale-grey stone fields, sandstones, and “stone rivers” flowing down the slopes. Lower down you’ll find spruce forests; higher up — mountain pine (dwarf pine), and on the open areas — mosses and lichens.
Most hikers plan the ascent from Osmoloda or from the Bystrytsia side — convenient starting points that make sense either for a full-day hike with an early start, or, more comfortably, a route with an overnight stay on a polonyna (mountain meadow). The climb usually begins in the forest with a steady, calm pace, then the trail moves into more open terrain. Near the top, the Gorgany’s signature rocky scree appears. This is where Syvulia’s main “feature” reveals itself: it teaches you not to rush. The rocks make you watch every step, but in return you get that unmistakable feeling of a truly wild mountain — the reason people come to the Gorgany.

The panorama from Velyka Syvulia is among the best in the massif. On clear days you can easily read the lines of nearby ridges, and the distant mountains layer toward the horizon. It’s the kind of summit where you don’t want to “tick a box” — you want to sit, rest, and watch how the light changes. But Syvulia doesn’t forgive carelessness. Wind can be sharp on exposed sections even in summer, and the rocks become slippery after rain. That’s why the best time for a first visit is summer and early autumn, when days are longer and stable weather is easier to catch.

If you enjoy rocky peaks with character, Syvulia is a natural next step after Mount Synyak or Malyi Gorgan. And if you’ve already hiked Dovbushanka, Syvulia will give you a similar Gorgany “stone” vibe — just on a bigger scale and with even wider panoramas.
